DLsite Game Won't Open, Extract or Shows Garbled Text (Mojibake): Official Fixes

1. Extract with the right tool

  • If Windows' built-in extractor fails, DLsite recommends Unicode-compatible software such as 7-Zip; on Mac, The Unarchiver. How to extract
  • Split files: put all parts in the same folder and run part1.exe. If that fails, open it with 7-Zip.
  • Errors like 0x80004005: extract again with 7-Zip. Very long paths (over 255 bytes) fail — extract in a short folder such as C:\DLsite. Security software may flag files wrongly; DLsite says it virus-checks every work before sale. Extraction errors

2. Garbled text or “file not found”: system locale

  • Garbled text, “File not found”, an empty folder after extracting, or a multi-language work staying in Japanese can mean your PC's system locale is not Japanese. Locale errors
  • Set the system locale to Japanese (Japan) and leave “Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8” unchecked. How to change the locale
  • Then delete the files you downloaded and download and extract again — DLsite notes that changing the setting alone will not fix files that are already garbled.

3. No PC? Use the browser or apps

Many works can be read or played in the browser with DLsite Play, and voice works in the DLsite Sound app — see reading and listening on your phone.
